Places I've been and want to visit - PRAGUE

Czechs call the capital, one of Europe's most beautiful cities, "matièka Praha" (little mother Prague). Under communist rule for 40 years, the city was freed by the Velvet Revolution of 1989 and has since blossomed into a desirable tourist destination.

Prague was spared the amount of war damage suffered by much of Europe. It offers a wonderful array of superb Gothic and Baroque architecture, elegant Art Nouveau and chiselled Cubist façades. Music is an important part of the city's charm. It hosts the annual Prague spring festival of classical music and opera, innumerable jazz and rock venues and has some excellent dance clubs.

Its layered history is in evidence wherever you go. Prague has been the capital of the Holy Roman Empire, the Habsburg Empire, the first Czechoslovak Republic, the Nazi Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, the Communist Republic of Czechoslovakia and now the modern Czech Republic. Be prepared for a little of each.

This is a city which calls out to be explored. As my cousin once said "it's a city within a city" medieval lanes and many hidden passages in the Old Town (Staré Mĕsto). There are beautiful, wooded parks. The Vltava River is perfect for gentle cruising. The river is straddled by a series of bridges and lined by cafés and restaurants.

Charles Bridge, which is lined with 30 statues of saints, was begun by Charles IV to replace an earlier bridge which had been washed away by floods. Many people lining up to touch the stautue for luck and have their photo taken while making that wish.

The marvellous old bridge stood firm against devastating floods in 2002. After WWII it became pedestrian-only and while it can become choked in the warmer months, it's worth crossing to see the hawkers and buskers and to enjoy the views.

Prague Castle is the city's most popular sight. Covering an area larger than seven football fields, the world's largest ancient castle was founded as a fortified settlement in the 9th century. A Romanesque palace was erected during the 12th century, then the 14th saw some Gothic additions. The Spanish Hall came in the 16th century and after WWI, the architect J Plecnik formed the interior and gardens. Its mixture of styles is the result of each new ruler making additions in his own taste. It has had four major reconstructions and despite many wars and fires, remains a splendid must-see for tourists. Remember to always start at the top and make your way down the many steps...

St Vitus Cathedral is Prague's most recognised landmark, with the added attractions of a monastery, several towers, palaces and Golden Lane where I would advise you duck for entry as we heard a few people bumping their heads on the way in and out.

You will probably need a day to explore the buildings and will see the window from where, in 1618, two Protestant nobles who were rebelling against the emperor were thrown to their deaths.

Today, Prague Castle is the seat of the President of the Czech Republic and serves as the historical and political centre of both city and state. Buildings not occupied by the Government are filled with galleries and shops. The toy collection in the former Counts Chambers is the second largest of its kind in the world.

Staromestské námestí (Old Town Square) is Prague's most spectacular square and the city's traditional heart. Most of the brightly-coloured houses look solidly eighteenth-century, but their Baroque façades hide older buildings. It was the city's main marketplace from the 11th century, known simply as Velké námestí (Great Square). All roads in Bohemia led to it and merchants from all over Europe gathered there. When the five towns that made up Prague were united in 1784, the Old Town Square's town hall was made the seat of the new city council and for the next 200 years this square (along with Wenceslas Square) witnessed the country's most violent demonstrations and battles. In summer, cafés spread out their tables, in winter there's a Christmas market and all year round tourists pour in to admire the 700-year-old town hall clock chime which we missed by only a few minutes, to sit on the steps of the Hus Monument and to drink in this historic showpiece.

Apparently Czech Republic has become a hot destination for foreign film production. Prague is adaptable enough to be a modern or period location.

Traditional pubs and eateries have been hit by a torrent of gourmet restaurants, cocktail bars and trendy cafés, but those seeking traditional pork, cabbage and dumplings won't be disappointed. Most meals are designed to be accompanied by fine Czech beer, something they have been making since the 9th century and of which they are justifiably proud, so unfortunate i'm not a beer drinker :-(

Café Imperial, in Prague's historic centre, is a wondrous art nouveau café, built in 1914 and is a must for any itinerary.

Meteor Plaza is a perfectly located property for visitors to Prague. The heritage-listed hotel is close to the Old Town Square and offers charming, old-world style. Its baroque façade dates to 1307, forming an entrance to a place of modern rooms and amenities. The hotel restaurant is located in an original 14th-century cellar. They offer a complimentary buffet breakfast and have a fitness centre and spa.

Seeing "The One"

I finished work on a Sunday afternoon at 5.00pm as usual. I was driving to meet my girlfriends at a hip and happening bar when I saw him.

Yes, him. "the one"

'His' Porsche was parked outside the church, of course I recognise the car, the number plate is tattooed in my memory, as it was mine once My heart sunk and my stomach jumped to my throat.

What do I do! I drive past the car as people are pouring out of the church turn the next left and go around the block! YES! I go past again!

I saw Dom walking down to the car, I know if he saw the audi, he would know its me. So, I continue down the street a little more and do a U-turn! I drive past again! I was possessed! What was I doing? I had no control. I turn right at the lights next to the church, he had other people getting into the car - I didn't know them?

Not only did I turn next to the church I do another U-turn! This one I will justify, I needed to go back in that direction.

He had driven up the road, I didn't follow. I did have to go up the street. At the lights (thankfully a 4 lane road) I turned left and he turned right.

Driving and shaking up the road to meet my friends. Unbelievable, the emotions this guy brings out of me.

He was "the one"

Entertaining a holiday romance

I'm in a state of lust.

The fairy tale came true.

I met a man in Monaco.

Alex is his name, coincidently the name of my last love. Put on a French accent and it sounds so romantic, he was so romantic.

The most romantic night of my life. (thus far)

I met Alex outside Monte Carlo casino while looking where the taxi stand had relocated as the grand prix was on only a couple days earlier and barricades were everywhere.

He asked me if I would like a tour guide for the next day, I hesitated and it was enough time for him to pull out a pen and paper and give me his number. He walked me to a taxi and instructed the driver to take me to my hotel.

Next day I was traveling to Nice, how very beautiful, I further traveled to Saint Paul de Vence , the medieval town perched on a mountain, the French people consumed me, the history of people past enveloped me. I loved the feeling, the loving couples walking hand in hand, I wanted the romance. Coming back from Saint Paul de Vence I decided to call Alex.

I told him I should be back in Monaco approximately 3.00pm, I will call when I arrive. 3.00pm I receive a call from Alex (caller ID) he was at my hotel.

I hoped of the bus, he gave me a kiss on both cheeks and I hoped into his car, all actions against my better judgment, but this was "holiday me".

We drove along the French Riviera for approximately 45mins, we stopped at Bouygues Sur Mer, he took my hand and we went for a walk along the cliffs on the coast, it was an amazing day, sky blue and the ocean a richer blue, large cruisers with attractive, wealthy occupants on the water.

He brought with him a French/English dictionary, his English isn't the best, but, I fall for the pidgeon English with the French accent....

We had a cool drink at a cafe' on the water, walked back to the car.

Alex asked me to dinner, I ran into my hotel room, jumped into the shower (the worlds fastest shower) slipped on my Dolce & Gabanna dress and joined him in the lobby.

We went to dinner at a beautiful French restaurant on a cliff top with a view along the coast facing Monte Carlo. It was overwhelming. Beautiful. Breathtaking.

French food, French food, French music, French man.

He looked longingly in my eyes, brushed my hair away from my face, gave me a light kiss...

I've never had this romance in one night - Aussie guys are different. I didn't know what to say - Aussie girls are different.

After dinner he walked me back to the hotel, gave me a kiss I will remember for the rest of my life. A night I will remember for the rest of my life...

I have been in constant contact with him since our one night together in Monaco. Text messages in English and cheeky French messages ;-)

Alex is my memory of Monaco.

Opera. Sydney. Life. Love

Don Giovanni

"his lips lie - his eyes deceive"

Last night was beautiful, sensational, breath-taking, spectacular (too many superlatives?) I had goose bumps all over and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up....

No hero-villain story is more compelling than Mozart's timeless tale of the world's most legendary lover in the last days of his life. The irresistible scoundrel is having a bad time of it: he is rejected by all the women he tries to seduce, and at the very end must confront his darkest fears, as the spirit of a man he once killed comes back to claim his revenge.

My "heart rage a thousand emotions"

When you look at how gorgeous Teddy Tahu Alexander!

The house erupted into applause, almost 10 minutes of constant appreciation for what we had just experienced. The tears began to swell from the beauty.

The Sydney Opera House is one of the most spectacular places in this beautiful city I call home. I can't wait for La Boheme in a months time....

Speed Dating - Yep I did it!

Wore: DKNY Skirt, Black 3/4 sleeve knit, Gucci Bag, Black Knee-high boots, not too much make-up for the sake of not looking like a drag queen after the inevitable copious amounts of alcohol

I Went Speed Dating On Saturday Night. Why did I agree to do it? I like nothing more than going out on a Saturday night to a nice pub or bar with my friends, sharing a bottle of red and chatting the night away where ideas such as speed dating sound so appealing...

We meet 15 or so guys over the course of the night, none that appealed, one possibility of a friend (and a possible pash & dash).

Some are easy to chat with, some are shy, some talk at a million miles an hour, the velvet suit can not go unnoticed, some are arrogant, the one who pulls out a photo of himself with a baby tiger and a couple who weren't the sharpest tools in the shed.

I was human broken record, asking the same questions and repeating the same in-25-words-or-less replies... I wasn't interested, and getting very drunk. Tequila, cheap wine and vodka do not mix.

Dent to the Ego or a Stab Through the Heart...?

I was out last night at a new happening night spot, a couple glass of Pinot and the great company of some of my closest friends.

The 3 of us girls are single and I brought along one of my great mate's M.. M. And I have been friends for approximately 4 years, had a date about 6 months after meeting, shared a kiss goodbye. I didn't feel anything, friends from that point... Until earlier this year around Easter we thought, we are friends, both single, mature, why not take our friendship to a more intimate level. All goes well for a month or so. Then. He said... "I miss T. (His old girlfriend) and wants to get back together....."

I didn't have any romantic feelings for M. So I wasn't hurt (well it dented my ego), I want him to be happy so I encouraged him to try again, give it 100%. He did and has been tentative to her needs etc.

Last night we are talking about the standard we have for a partner. They all "ganged" up on me saying I was too pedantic!?!? ME! I quickly reminded them of some of my past boyfriends... ;-)

Well, M. said "my standards are at an all time low, look, I'm seeing T." and added sarcastically "you can tell how happy I am".

My horror! He was seeing me - all the while he wanted to get back with the elusive T. If his standards are at an all time low with T. what does that say I was.....?

Explaining Dating!

When does a hook-up become a hook-in?
SMH Article.

'I think we're seeing each other now but, who knows, maybe we're just having a "thing". As long as were not called buddies or Plan B bonks, I'm content."

My friend Kylie and I are trying to categorise the new and varying forms of relationship. Dating has become a thing of the past, mutating into non-committal hook-ins, hook-ups and a good deal of stuff-ups. Is it possible to be in a genuinely casual relationship with no messy strings attached? Or did Nan have it right when she said men are like lipstick: once you get a good one, stick to it.

What's so bad about old fashioned dating? At first it seemed liberating to have a different guy for every occasion. It was thrilling to be out to dinner with Mr Nice Guy and have Mr Smooth texting you saucy messages. But the excitement wore off when you realised that you had become Miss Too-Available, or worse, Little Miss Substitute-for-a-real-girlfriend.

And men don't have it any easier. Unfortunately for guys, they haven't yet mastered dating spin talk. They don't understand that if a girl says "We're not technically together", it's a plea for him to chase her, not an invitation to see other women.

This communication gap leaves a lot of dating casualties.

The problem is there are no rules. What's the difference between hooking up and hooking in? At what time are you allowed to see other people and, worst of all, what constitutes a Bonk Buddy?
The Hook-Up is a frivolous, non-committal pash, whereas the Hook-In implies a whole new world of meaning. You hook up with a stranger, you hook in with that particularly intriguing person you've been fantasising about for months.

The Casual Relationship is sandwiched somewhere between Santa Claus and the tooth fairy. It is a fictional state where two people frequently go out - and inevitably sleep over - with minimal commitment or responsibilities. And if someone else comes along, there's nothing stopping you from having a little on the side.

My favourite is Seeing Each Other. This is the closest these hybrid relationships come to traditional dating. Basically, Seeing Each Other has replaced the 1950s term Going Steady. It means you're committed enough to be with each other exclusively, but are still too scared to classify it as dating.

On the other end of the dating spectrum is the dreaded Bonk Buddy relationship. Booty Calls, Plan B Bonks, Old Faithfuls, whatever you call them, there's no hiding it. These relationships are purely physical. You hook up, you have sex and you go your separate ways.

Yet it's almost impossible to sleep with someone repeatedly and not form some kind of emotional attachment. But now there's a strange new category forming - the retro-relationship, a throwback to the days where people dated and actually committed to each other.
It's a little crazy, but who knows? Monogamy and dedication just might work.

Just My Imagination?

I had visited the same cafe' on 3 different occasions with 3 different guys - I truly felt the waiter raise an eye brow....

I need a new "safe place" to meet these guys!

The Office Kitchen

Today I venture into the kitchen and there is not a clean tea spoon in sight! How hard is it really to rinse a tea spoon after making a coffee?

There are dozens of tea spoons with a little puddle of coffee or tea, some tea spoons are stained in the centre.

Really, just rinse the spoon or put it into the mug that's sitting in the sink full of water!

YEW

Another date.....

So, this one I worked with a few years ago, bumped into each other and thought hey, why not? He seemed nice enough back then.

I'll tell you why not!

The intoxicating aroma of stale cigarettes and coffee.

Nop! Not going to even go in for a small kiss on the cheeks goodbye!

Is this the best?

Another day another date gone bad:

A friend of a friend. You would think you would be briefed better by your close friends.

Scenario

I apparently meet this guy (W) December 2004 at a birthday party, no I don't remember him. He asked a girlfriend if I was single... Yup I sure am. A few months later I decide to see this guy, I didn't remember this guy?

How the date went

Short! He came up to my shoulder! Of course he says "wow! Your tall!" really does he need to draw any further attention to the matter ;-) We were doing the usual getting to know you conversation, nothing in common. He ordered a skim cap and used sugar substitute!

Can't date a guy who can't have a simple coffee!

Moral of the story..... If you can't remember meeting someone at a party (that you were not under the influence of alcohol) there is a reason!

Aussie's and the Opera

I was talking to J. about the opera - this is her comment...

I love Don Giovanni - but yes, very expensive. That's why I've always said the government should subsidise it slightly so more people can experience cultural events like this. No wonder we have a reputation for being sport-loving morons.

My Friend's Friend

I was at L. B'day party, I love L. We have been friends since we were 13.

L. Is real, no pretentious tendencies, direct, witty, loving. The best friend a girl can ever have.

However, I do not have the same opinion of some of her friends. Quote from K.

I'm a vegetarian, but I eat chicken
