Most peoples opinion of us bloggers are that we are pretentious bunch oozing with self-importance and of course the random journalism dropout. I have become addicted to updating my blog. I kept my little blog private for many months, writing the highs, the lows and the real lows. I recently started scrolling through random blogs on the blogoshpere prior to it was only a couple of friends and following the links and then their links so on and so on. Good thing I have approximately 2 hours worth of work to do in an 8 hour working day.
I've left a couple of comments and received a couple in return - I'm afraid my addiction could become dangerous (or result in less work being done while at the office) I stumbled across Joblog Vacancy. Which brings me to comment etiquette.
- If one leaves a comment on a blog should the other person then be expected to leave a comment on yours?
- Is it right to leave a comment on a bloggers blog that we don't have a 6 degree of separation?
- When someone writes you a comment, do you reply on their blog or underneath their comment on your blog?
- If you link to someone's blog is it correct etiquette to link to them?
- Are you to link to what is relevant to your blogs subject matter, or link to blogs that you enjoy?
My mind still boggles how blog still comes up in spell check!?!?

My two cents...

Not necessarily. I only comment on blogs that resonate with me, regardless of whether they have commented on my blog or not. I'd rather leave a comment that I mean, than just an inane "oh I'm trying to be polite" comment.

Sure, why not? If they've written something that you find interesting/funny/thoughtful/relevant, leave a comment. One of the things that I like about blogging is that even if you are writing for YOU, you can also get feedback from other people.

Underneath their comment - its like a conversation.
- If you link to someone's blog is it correct etiquette to link to them?
Nope, not unless you want to recipro-link. My links are split between friends who recipro-link, and other blogs that I just find interesting to read (who don't necessarily link back to me).

Mine just link to other blogs I like to read. It also makes it easier for me to read those blogs regularly, since I don't have to remember what the URL is or use the same computer all the time to access my Favourites.
Some blogs have specific themes - fashion, politics, law, work - but other blogs are personal or might contain a mix of all these elements and others, so trying to stick with that theme for links might be difficult.
OK, this seems like a really long comment to leave (more than just my 2 cents worth!), so I think that I'll stop typing now.
I’m no expert but when I started blogging I was looking for guidelines and found everyone did their own thing.
I don't think there should be an expectation for reciprocal commenting. I always visit their blog and leave a comment if I can, but it's not always possible. I may return and find another post I can comment on, because I like to show that I visited.
I always reply on my blog post, because it engages readers and maintains the focus on that topic. Blog conversations start that way and commenters can interact with one another. Replying to their comment on their blog can be confusing and out of context.
Linking can become contentious if it’s not reciprocated. I maintain that it’s your blog, link to whomever you like. If I have regulars I don’t wish to link to, I visit and comment on their blogs frequently.
Thank you for linking to my post :). I noticed the hits from my counter and thought I’d check it out. Like you, I suffer from blog addiction. It’s better than TV, that’s my excuse!
Thank you for your comprehensive feedback! MWAH!
Great work!
