I was chatting to mum last night, every time she turned on the tele while in Hawaii she was subjected to the JonBenet Ramsay case. She was overjoyed last night when she heard an update, she got her hit
The theory that Julia and I came up with while we were in Fiji over the New Year is there seems to be a huge world story every time we’re overseas, the birth of this theory was when we became ingrossed by these issues that usually only get 10 second airing time on our tabloid news. We were intrigued with the intricate details surrounding the Russian/Ukraine Gas Crisis.
While I was in Italy last year the only program in English was CNN, I heard about the Michael Jackson trial over and aver and over… once again CNN was like a drug.
Going back a little further, on work holiday December 2004, I can remember it like yesterday, sitting on the lounge in the arms of my boyfriend at the time watching the Tsunami in Indonesia engulf the land. CNN coverage on repeat.
As my dear friend Julia say’s about Australian news: ‘Where else but Australia can you get 10 minutes of news, 15 minutes of sport highlights and 5 minutes of weather updates?’

I really know it's gotten bad in Australia when we start to have 24hr sports news channels....not sports channels, but sports news.
australian news is pretty australia-centric, I find...
I love CNN. But don't have cable. Although the repeating of stories over and over again can get, well, repetitive. So I surf to SkyNews and whatever local news is on, the turn the box off.
Broken News on SBS on Monday's after Top Gear - laugh-a-minute - but the last show was last Monday!! Just when I find a great program!
I'm a CNN watcher. But when I'm out of the country, I find that I watch BBC more often. I love BBC. More than CNN.
Does that make me a nerd? :-)
The news depresses the living shite outta me.
Having said that, i watch Sky news instead of the nightly free to air versions.
I reckon even calling it "news" in Australia is a stretch. I don't watch it on TV anymore - it's just a waste of time. Too much I don't need to know and very little I do - and all filtered by the same agencies anyway.
I rarely watch the news on the tele these days. I tend to read it instead - I usually end up catching the late news if I'm watching tele though. When I had pay tv I'd watch bbc all the time.
I believe you are fortunate with your news schedule. I have 3 newscasts going all day for work, CNN, FOX and SKY. I find them to be sensationalists and most often wrong. As the story unfolds the scoop becomes the poop.
If I could I would eliminate or limit them to 1/2 hour day at some predefined hour.
