A sailor was also known as a Jack tar, Jack or tar. the tar comes from the habit of using tar to seal their pig tails and beards. this stopped them from blowing in the breeze so to speak.
Mondern Naval language (at least Brit and Oz derived from speak from long ago) is very interesting.
Goffer (pron, gougher - Salute or Drink
SCRAN - any meal (sometimes used as an acronym for Shit Cooked by the Royal Australian Navy)
Duff - Pudding
Pusser - see jack tar - but derived from the word purser for the ship's officer of the same title.
Ogen - Ocean
Scuttle - Porthole
Gunnie - Derogatory word for woman as in 'Gun mole'
Jimmy - Bosuns mate
Dhobey - Washing clothes or Self
Trout - a loud moth
Banyan - Piss up
Dogs - the short two hour shifts between 1600 and 2000
Tiddlyogg - Pastie
Steppin' - to go off base or off ship
Steppin rig - Good Civilian clothes
Rig - Clothes
Dog - latch for doors on ships
Scibe - Office sailor
OD - newbie from the title 'Ordinary Seaman'
Buzz - rumour
I could go on but let me atest to the fact that ALL sailors must learn this guff before they can converse with old salts (guys that have been around a while)
wasn't it "talk like a pirate day" about 2 months ago? And also about 3 months before that? Someone's just making this stuff up, huh?
