I read the following quote…
… Then I thought of this song
Life is too short for ugly women. - Ernest Hemingway
… Then I thought of this song
If you wanna be happy
For the rest of your life,
Never make a pretty
woman your wife,
So from my personal point of view,
Get an ugly girl to marry you.
A pretty woman makes her husband look small
And very often causes his downfall.
As soon as he marries her
Then she starts to do
The things that will break his heart.
But if you make an ugly woman your wife,
You'll be happy for the rest of your life,
An ugly woman cooks her meals on time,
She'll always give you peace of mind.
Don't let your friends say
You have no taste,
Go ahead and marry anyway,
Though her face is ugly,
Her eyes don't match,
Take it from me she's a better catch.

Very smart man is our Ernest.
I have a love/hate relationship with that song.
Rob Clarkson's song Beautiful Girls and Beautiful Boys speaks to me more. Have a listen if you can find it anywhere... it's sure to give you a chuckle... ;)
He also said "Never go on trips with anyone you do not love" so what? The first quote IMHO was more directed to the fact that 'Pretty Women' get all the perks (no pun intended) whereas 'Plane Jane' gets none and therefore her life is shortened by lack of material things and opportunity. It was only HIS opinion. Deep aren't I :)
I agree, beauty is relative. The characteristics of what is beautiful change over time and across the world. Usually beauty relates to the subconscious of natural selection, wide hips and big breasts relate to the capability to birth and raise children, thin and body tone to a healthy body, tall and muscular men, the capability to protect from danger, money (yes a characteristic in today's world) is security, witt is intelligence thus the capability to better one's position.
An ugly woman? hmmm... Perhaps life is too short for a sickly woman.
hahaha that song actually made me laugh!
Was I the only one horrified by that song?
I do believe there's some truth to that song. I'm not sure about the Hemingway quote though.
To paraphrase Forrest Gump - "Beauty is, as beauty does."
Indy: I agree! I don't like ugly woman either ;-)
M - The tune is so cute and happy I can't help like the song, it's the lyrics are not that disirable
Scorpy, I know you have your moments...
Lulu - I have the soundtrack too! The song remeinds me more of 'Chances Are' on old 80's movie I loved.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder That was what I was going to write as my title :-)
David: Usually beauty relates to the subconscious of natural selection Love it! So true...
in2deep - It's a cute song :-)
sarah - I think you are!
egan - so, you think ugly woman wont stray and beauty is subjective?
nick - Good one :-)
Nope Sarah, not the only horrified by that, especially since, to me, maybe 90% of people in this world are not classically beautiful, but merely beautiful and attractive to another.
so true so true :)
Unfortunately I am already in love with someone who is beautiful in my eyes. In my friends eyes, she is "ordinary" which makes me realize she is not good looking. But does have a good heart :)
By the way, this is what I heard about marriage
"Marry someone who loves you more than you love her"
Lucy 10% are beautiful? I would say less than that.
Swagato - "Marry someone who loves you more than you love her"
I say be with someone who loves you more than you love them - not going into marriage yet
