As many of you would be well aware by now I’m looking to purchase my first property to call my own. It’s a very long, tedious experience (I can rant for hours about fucked up real estate agents. Being one, I feel I can do it right) on a positive note I’m enjoying the amateur interior designs, the colours people pick, the obscurity of modern simplicity with French provincial and moving along to the next room that’s been influenced by Feng Shui and that Pulp Fiction poster hanging in the corner?
I do spend excessive amounts of time parading in front of vendor / tenant book, CD and DVD collections, pretending it’s just a glance, you can tell so much about people from their entertainment collection.
There are so many ideas I have stored in that little filing cabinet in the back of my brain from my many years of property inspections, what I just wouldn’t consider doing in my own apartment, those great innovative ways of creating space without the use of sleazy mirrors or Ikea’s swish bang shelving collection(not that there’s anything wrong with that). I’ve also house-sat at a few friends’ abodes over the last year and I now know the little things I take for granted at home, the very simple thing , having an easy to use cork remover, of being able to set ALL my clocks at the same time, investing in a clock that doesn’t make that godforsaken tick tick tick sound that just drives me up the wall.
When it comes to furnishings, as with every other aspect of my life I’m torn between too extremes, give me anything with a history, I love this French Armoire and equally adore this lounge room (yes, it’s from the house).

I can’t even fathom the amount of stores I’m going to enter to achieve the style I want. If it took me almost 2 years and 5 countries to find a small plain black handbag that I like, Oooohh it’s going to be a lengthy process. Ha! And I sometimes wonder why it’s taking me so long to find a property, I’ve narrowed my search selection not to waste anytime… Sorry, my dear friends you’ll have to listen to me whinge for a while longer.
I’ve already purchased some kitchen stuff; I’m totally in love with it. Plain white dinner set and stylish stainless sliver cutlery, a few bits and pieces all stainless sliver. It’s this simple style I wish to remain consistent; it complements my Czech porcelain serving platter and tea sets.
Most of my ‘free’ time these days is researching cost of bed linen, general manchester, I love rich luxurious whites, chocolate browns, all the neutrals. I haven’t even started at the electrical appliances! Plasma. Did I hear someone say plasma…?

Plasma???? Once you've had LCD widescreen...you'll never go back..I know I won't. I love my LCD Screen :)
there is no way I can afford all the shit I want after I finally (if ever) buy a house! boo.
Looking for the DVD/CD collection is one of the things I make sure I do when looking at a house. I don't want any of that horrid bad music collection vibe to rub off on me should I buy the property. The celine dion stink stays around for years I hear.
Love the Armoire. The den furniture is a bit contemporary for my taste but should be a nice touch. Perhaps Cantoni?
A recommendation on bedlinen: Sheridan Millenia 1000 thread count sheets - divine! (ridiculous expensive though)
That armoire kinda freaks me out. Sorry.
I love the lines of the living room though!
I know when I moved into my current place, I used it as a blank canvas to create my own space, with only my own lack of style to guide me...ok I admit I spent most of the time on creating a babe-lair with a really cool TV and better BBQ.
I am still yet to put a beer fridge by the lounge...but it's coming ~grin~
Maybe you should have all your readers send you photo's of the favourite room they have decorated and just "steal" their ideas?
russ, brown poo is in. Yellow poo is sooo 1998.
nat, it'll be tough matching minimalistic Feng Shui with antique European stylings...
Scorpy, I'll have to do some research plasma v LCD
M - I'm in the same boat as you. I can't afford what i really like. I didn’t know Dion hangs around? I thought it was ZZ Top :-P
David, i looked up Cantoni, NICE stuff!
Jules, I'm a huge fan of Sheridan Millenia. It would max out my credit card ;-)
Sarah, does it remind you of the cupboard in Beauty and the Beast?
That house was the first one i worked on. From acquisition, concept, approval and tender :-)
Rus, believe me, there'll be lots of colour!
Indy, a babe-lair – why doesn’t that surprise me :-P Thanks for the idea, after the dismal performance of our readers with pics I wont bother.
Cibby, I love a challenge : -)
I loooove the armoire! I wish that was my bedroom - with the 1000 thread count sheridan sheets as well....I'm already imagining the view from the balcony that those doors lead to. Sublime.
On occasion, I write about houses for a home decorating magazine (gah! horrid, I know - sorry) The main outcome of this is that I've come to loathe all-white houses. As a real estate agent I know you've seen them - those god-awful new kit homes owned by people who are terrfied of colour and who end up choosing a fabulous pallette of white or beige. Bathroom to kitchen, floor tiles to ceiling, front facade to the back toilet, they're all so @#$%ing NEUTRAL. So long as you don't decorate in all white or all beige, it will be fine, Miss Natalie. Colours! Please choose some colours!
I gotta say I agree on the "giant bathroom" look... I find the all white a bit cold, clinical, and soul-less.
But I know what you mean... sometimes it's really hard to convey exactly what you're looking for to someone else. You just look at something and go..."ooooh no, WRONG!", and other times, "yes... YES! THAT'S THE LOOK I WANT!!!!!!".
You'll get there ;)
Sheridan Millenia is the best! Mum came back with two sets (purchased from their warehouse for a third of the price!) and she swears she will never go back to 300 thread count! I'm in the market for new linen, so would love to go with you after Christmas :-)
LCD better picture quality but trouble is they don't make them too big. Depends on the room you are putting it in. I am getting a 26" next week. Will post photos once its in!!
Jodes, it feels like i life i will never know only observe from a far...
redcap, all white no-no. i do like neutrals, in fact i need neutrals to go with my eccentric bright coloured paintings :-)
GB - I'm sure i'll get there, it will take time *a whole lot of precious time to do it, to do it ri-ight*
Alpha - I'm jealous re: Millenia! so would love to go with you after Christmas :-) does that mean you've made arrangements to come????
