The première of Turandot was at La Scala, Milan, on Sunday April 25, 1926, 1 year and 5 months after Puccini's death. I'm happy to report I saw the most elequently executed version on Friday night.
We had the BEST seats! Second row, just left from centre, I took L with me, as a birthday present. Reciprocal performances we have decided for each others birthday presents, she was the one that took me to see STOMP (the second time).
Any prince seeking to marry Princess Turandot must answer 3 riddles - and if he fails, he will die.
Puccini is one of my top 3 favourite composers and this production did not dissapoint. If there is anyone tossing up seeing their first Opera I’d highly recommend Turondat, the production was fantastic, brought a tear to my eye, a flush of passion and goose bumps… Beautiful.

What is born each night and dies each dawn?
What flickers red and warm like a flame, yet is not fire?
What is like ice but burns like fire?

Is the moon born each night and killed each dawn?
What is like ice but burns? Red-hot charcoals?
I'd highly recommend Turandot too... but I'm biased because I sang in it last time it was in Adelaide (back in my Opera singing days). ;-) Hahaha.
I was listening to the Turandot CD last night, in fact!!!! Freaky!!!

Rev Tim - I admire your ability to sing and such beautiful music too :-)
Thanks Ant! I would post a new clip each day but it takes longer to lead the page and I think only you and Tim appreciate it ...
My father's older brother was a huge fan of this song and really this is the only opera I've ever liked. I really the Pavoratti version since it was the one that was played after a bunch of Johnny Walker Blacks. Everytime I hear this song, I can not but think of my late uncle and grandparents in generals. I truly feel Nessun Dorma is is one of the most powerful works of art and I'm always astounded by the vocal the abilities of the late Pavoratti although I'm not a big fan of this genre. Pavoratti will always belong with every member of my family which I cherish very much.
