Last night I attended the Preview of Graeme Murphy’s The Directors Cut. A beautiful modern ballet at the Sydney Opera House.
I'm an Opera fan, I’ve only ever seen classical ballet, this production is modern where some of the movements looked a combination of pilates/yoga, however the talent is sensational and the passion for 'what's new' for dance is inspirational and invigorating...

"We should be developing more of our own culture…creating something that is Australian in feeling – works by Australian composers and Australian choreographers that express our own culture.” Graeme Murphy

Act 1 Gossamer - erotic and pure, sexual but innocent, the dancers were superb, executing each movement with precision
Act 2 Glimpses - a modern interpretation of classical ballet, the most beautiful imagery
Act 3 CUT – could’ve been cut about 15 minutes, the choreography was sensational and passionate.

Awesome. I am so going to see this. There is nothing in the world quite like dance.
It's poetry brought to life.
See, this is where I'm kinda screwed.
I love my Opera and I love my Arts.
However I am fussy when it comes to classical ballet, because as much as I love the beauty and the choreography, and most of all the music - the strained faces of many ballerinas trying to look "passionate" instead makes me think they are constipated. I find this greatly distracting.
I am also fussy again when it comes to modern/interprative dance because there's a VERY fine line between being creative and being pretentious.
So yeah. As much as I love the Arts, I also very much loathe it at times.
Being honest, how did this show fare on a "pretentious wank-off" scale of 1 to 10? :-)
Interesting Fact: When I went looking on the Internet for this performance, I also noticed that Turandot is doing the rounds again. I actually was singing in that last time it was here! Haha.
Ahhh Steph, I didn't have you pegged as a ballet fan. Second act was the best IMHO. When are you going???
Reverend - You can sing? Sensational! I wish I could carry a tune, I'm afraid of cracking glass :-(
As far as the wank factor - I'm not a fan of 'modern ballet' they were free tickets, I wouldn't have paid. I can see similar moves at the local pilates studio. With that said, i can appreciate the presentation.
I haven't seen Turandot since I was too young to enjoy/appreciate Opera. Opera Australia is celebrating 50 years hence the classics are on - I'm booking Turandot and Rigoletto - Puccini & Verdi are my ULTIMATE Favs! I was contemplating going to Melbourne to see La Traviata, but no-one wanted to go down with me, if I said shopping it would’ve been a different story.
A live performance is always fantastic, there is no "cut, let's try that again", each time is an individual presentation.
I love theatre, dance, anything live, there's no safety net. I saw Cirque De Soleil last year and loved it.
I would SO be up for offering to accompany you to La Traviata in Melbourne... but alas, I am saving for Japan, and soon to be out of a job. Haha. CURSE YOU OPERA AUSTRALIA!
As for singing... well... I *used* to sing a long time ago. In the time before I.T. Hehe. Anyway, yeah, I had actor's equity, and was a member of Co*Opera, etc.
Now? Nahhhhh. I haven't sung in AGES.
That said... Shhhh... A friend of mine has asked me to front his new band, and I've accepted. It's all a bit hush-hush right now though, hehe.
PS: EVERYBODY can sing with the right coaching and dedication. I'm serious. Very, very few people are honestly "tone deaf". You just need to be confident, dedicated, and enjoy music. :-)
I've seen some terrible dance performances, trussed up under the guise of 'modern dance'...
Ballet is always fun, though. It's so graceful that it looks easy, until you try it at home and smack your knee into the counter and fall to the ground, whimpering.
Thats right nick - nothing beats it. I saw Cirque De Soleil approx 7 years ago. You MUST go to an opera!
Reverend - HOW SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!! *squeals* your secret is safe with me ;-) I've contemplated singing lessons, went belly dancing instead. Hmmm?
Cibby, they do make it look so easy! Inspiring so that I considered working out again - the thought passed...
